On missions you may encounter local military/police or armed civilians fighting the Alien forces. The local forces are generally weak and won't last long against the Aliens, but they can provide a useful indicator of the location of Alien enemies.
Different kinds of Local Forces have different armament. Soldiers are equipped with Assault Rifles and Machine Guns, while Civilians and Police Officers only have pistols and shotguns.
As the invasion progresses, and as the Xenonauts' research continues to advance, local forces will eventually be equipped with laser weaponry, increasing their lethality.
