Your 6x6 grid base placed somewhere on the map to fight the aliens invasion. This is where you build your facilities.

Starting base as of V21.
This is where you will carry out your out of mission preparation. In the bases screen this allows you to place facilities that can be ordered in any fashion so long as it as room and doesn't overlap other rooms.
A more advanced base.
NOTE: You cannot place rooms without them being able to be connected to the command center in the middle of the base.
Base Upgrade[]
Available once the player successfully obtain their first Alien Base Datacore (This is automatically researched, like all datacores).

The base upgrade once researched, will automatically be applied, giving a 50% boost to research and manufacture until the end of the game. This also lets the Labs, Workshops, Living Quarters, and Store Room, have an upgraded look to them.
Base Defense[]

Sometimes your base will get attacked by disembarked alien troops, so be ready for a fight to the death.
Bases with no soldiers will automatically be destroyed after a successful landing.
Initially, alien troops can only enter via Hangers. This will change later.
